Prepping

OK, I am really hot on getting information together for myself. I have yet to be diagnosed with ADD for that matter, but I would like to get a head start on what I will need before I even enter an office. I started printing out questionnares and rating my behavior, that sort of thing. I emailed my brother and asked him what he could recall of growing up with me so I can take that too. I also plan on getting my current boyfriend to accompany me. Other then school records what else can I collect? Kim

Hi Kim:

I would recommend reading these articles before you see your doctor for a diagnosis...

Adult ADHD Diagnosis: What to Ask a New Doctor: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/1860.html

What Your Doctor Needs to Know About Diagnosing ADHD in Adults: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd-web/article/596.html

Treatment for Adults with ADHD: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd-web/article/558.html

I hope these help!

Preparation

Check out some books regarding adults with ADHD. Here are three books I would suggest:

Driven to Distraction by Drs. Hallowell and Ratey

Understanding Women with AD/HD by Kathleen Nadeau and Patricia Quinn

Women with Attention Deficit Disorder by Sari Solden

Some of the other books on ADHD describe hyperactive young boys and there are differences between how ADHD is expressed in adult women and how it is expressed in hyperactive young boys. Also, if you are inattentive instead of hyperactive, there are other symptoms that aren't mentioned in the official criteria but are common in those with the inattentive type of ADHD. The above books give a better picture of how ADHD is expressed in adults and women. You may be able to find those books at your local library.

Good luck,

Elaine

not diagnosed either

My son was just diagnosed in his third year of college. I have devoured anything about ADHD that I can find. (Boy am I hyperfocusing!). During my reading, I discovered I was also reading about me as well as my son. I know I have learned some coping techniques, but I still struggle. I keep thinking when am I going to grow up? At 51, I should be there. So I've decided to head to the doctor after my 'baby' leaves for college next month. It is time. I also want to be able to talk with my husband of 27 years a bit better. We have buried some things over time putting the kids first, and talking intimately is very difficult for me. Oh, I can chatter. but I say a lot about nothing. So thanks for the articles and other tips I see listed. It will help get this ball rolling.
